The massive and superficial use of the word “virtual” masks a rich and subtle concept, clarified by Gilles Deleuze in Différence et Répétition (1968), preceding the works of Gilles-Gaston Granger, Philippe Quéau and Pierre Lévy. This article intends to synthesize the ontological analysis of the virtual from the philosopher, by confronting it to more recent but somewhat contradictory views.
