Is it necessary, for an emerging research programme in cognitive science, to propose a scientific definition of cognition, conceived as a natural kind? This article proposes a number of prospective elements which tend to a negative response to this question. The major theoretical innovations to come in cognitive science could call into question the principle according to which the cognitive sciences, whatever their doctrinal orientation, all study a single trans-theoretical object (cognition).
