This contribution reviews the arguments that ”social cognition” (a field of research at the crossroads of comparative psychology and evolutionary anthropology), mobilizes to provide explanations on the emergence of human cognition. Drawing on contemporary work in evolutionary biology and epistemology, the article critically examines the hypotheses formulated by "social cognition" to reconstruct the genesis of the human mind, and discusses its relative success in contemporary social sciences.
