Cognitive Science and Environmental Crises: 1. An Overview of Research in France

This paper provides an overview of cognitive science research on environmental crises conducted in France since 2015. The publications presented in this overview concern both mitigation actions and adaptation processes. Based on a survey of about 300 publications by nearly 200 cognitive scientists in French teams, we identified nine research themes covering individual behavior, collective behavior, adaptation to crises, relationships with nature, health in relation to emotional processes, narratives and argumentative processes, relationships with computer sciences, education, and finally, research itself. This paper should be useful to members of the academic community but also to citizens and policymakers by providing a global overview of who is doing what within the cognitive science domain in this critical area. We hope that this will contribute to the development of this field, support scientists seeking to explore new avenues, and provide useful insights for decision-makers in the elaboration of education and research policies.
