Is knowledge engineering a science program? Knowledge is built from technical devices which are in themselves the manifestation of necessary laws as well as the limited framework within which they are effective. Writing and computation, understood here as the blind manipulation of symbols, are such devices; besides they are able to propose new symbolic configurations that are meaningful possibly according to new ways. Knowledge engineering is defined and discussed here as the scientific domain whose objective is to build devices and technical systems handling with digital inscriptions of knowledge as well as meaningful digital inscriptions. Knowledge engineering is then at the meeting point between computer engineering which brings technical invention of new devices, logics and mathematics that are able to propose a formal understanding of these devices, and finally information sciences that study information and communication as socio-cultural complex.
